Nesting Pair

This is a nesting pair of birds shot in my backyard. I’m not particularly happy with either shot [Thanks Tim, Steve, & Steve] but I should have so time to improve. Since this pair is building a nest in my backyard my only limitations should be the ticking clock for the cycle of such things, and my ability to stand on the rung of step ladder for long enough periods of time!

I like the shot with the bird and the nest. I felt it needed something though. I sent an email with an adjusted version of the nest and the bird.

I made a selection of the tree and did a levels adjustment to lighten it up some. I wanted to see the inside of the hole a little brighter as well as the bark on the tree. I also made another selection of the bird and performed a small saturation adjustment to make the bird stand out from the background a little more.

You may not agree and that's okay too.

Nice shots Larry!

I like the composition of both photos. I like the lighting on the bottom shot but the top one seems a little flat (a little fill flash might have helped but I bet you could make improvements in post-processing with curves adjustments or, like Doug suggested, levels adjustments)!

Careful on the step ladder!

Cheers!

Both shots are better than any bird photo that I have ever shot. Good job. I cannot believe you shot these with only 70-200 and a 1.4 telconverter. I think Mayeux needs to sell his 600mm!

Thanks for the comments Doug, Larry and Barry. I'm incouraged enough to try and better these shots, especially since the opportunity is in my own backyard!
