Chasing Rainbows 4

My last shot from the rainbow chasing experiment couldn't include the SJ Monument because the Baytown Nature Center is on the opposite side of the Houston Ship Channel from where the rainbow was visible. Nonetheless the sky was still interesting to the south and I like the way this shot came out.

I like the concept of trying to frame the Monument with the tree. The subject of the photo is readily apparent. I cannot help but wonder if the sun's rays coming at a diagonal from the clouds wouldn't have been better off being visible all the way down. I know that would have been pretty bright and may be why you placed it behind the leaves.

I can't quite put my finger on what I think it needs. It may be the open side that's throwing me. Again, it's only one opinion here. The horizon does need to be straightened a little where it rises up on the right.

Nice shot Larry! Great dramatic sky and I like the tree being included in the foreground.

I agree with Doug that straightening the horizon would improve this one (to keep the monument from looking like the leaning tower of Pisa).

Cheers!

I like your framing of the monument also, and the backlight that makes it a silhouette. Did you try cropping in some? The monument seems so small in the frame, I might try cropping out the ground in the foreground, leaving the water and crop out some of the darkest part of the tree and the very dark cloud at the top, and leave all the clouds on the left. That leaves the interesting clouds, the water with the reflections and some of the leaves to still frame the monument at the top (but I do miss the limbs being farther down...). The black and white conversion is a perfect choice, and this is a very nice image overall.

If you are from this area, this is a photo that you immediately recognize, so to do something different is very hard. Good use of B&W and nicely framed.
